Most people think that increasing their credit score is a hard thing to accomplish and that they cannot get the job done on their own. Nothing is farther from the truth and with all the great self credit repair information and products available today there is no reason why the average consumer cannot quickly and affordably increase FICO scores on their own.

Whats The First Step To Increasing Your Credit Score

The very first step to credit repair is to know where your credit stands and the only way you can do this is to purchase a copy of your consumer credit report. Your credit report will show you not only what your credit scores are but also the history of all your credit history over the last 7 years. Your credit report will also show any derogatory public records as well.

Knowing what your scores are before you start is critical because it gives you a baseline number to work to improve as well as the detailed information you need about your credit history. Make sure you look over your credit report very carefully. The reason for this close inspection is that a large percentage of the credit reports have some sort of error on them. These errors will generally cost you points and do damage to your over all credit profile.

What Kinds Of Errors Am I Looking For

There are an infinite amount of errors that can be found on credit reports but there are many common ones that are easy to spot and i have listed below

  • Accounts That Are Not Yours
  • Credit Inquiries That You Did Not authorize
  • Incorrect Account Balances or Limits
  • Incorrect Late Payment Reporting For Accounts
  • False Derogatory Public Records

What To Do Once You Find These Mistakes

Once you identify these items its time to works some credit repair magic and contact the credit bureaus about them. Send in a hand written dispute letter stating the problem with each account and request that the account be removed. Under Federal Law the credit bureau has to investigate your claims. What they will do is to ask the reporting lender to validate what they are reporting about you.

What If They Do Not Investigate My Claims

If they do not initiate a investigation or the original lender cannot provide proof that the item is indeed reporting correctly it has to be removed. You will have the best luck disputing 1-2 items at a time. Anymore then that and it will start to look suspicious to the credit bureaus and they will more then likely issue you the dreaded "frivolous dispute" letter.

This is their way of saying we know what your doing and you need to stop, they will also not accept any future dispute from you. So make sure you avoid the mistakes that can trigger a "Frivolous Dispute Letter" from being sent to you!
